About Roads to Recovery

Recovery is possible - and no one should have to pursue it alone.

Roads to Recovery is a nonprofit, peer-led recovery organization based in Lynchburg, Virginia. Since 2013, we have supported people seeking recovery from substance use disorders through peer support, recovery housing, community-based services, groups, meetings, resource navigation, and connection to a community of people who understand.

At the heart of our work is a simple belief: there is no single path to recovery. Our role isn't to tell someone what recovery has to look like. It's to walk alongside them as they identify their own goals, build recovery capital, overcome barriers, and create a life they want to sustain.

Our mission is to assist people to find and sustain recovery from substance use disorders, and to eliminate the stigma that prevents people from getting help.

Roads to Recovery was built on the belief that lived experience has extraordinary value. Peer Recovery Specialists use their own recovery experience, professional training, and knowledge of community resources to support others as they navigate recovery.

Peer support isn't clinical treatment, and it isn't about telling someone what to do. It's about connection, encouragement, accountability, practical support, and having someone beside you who understands that recovery rarely happens in a straight line.

Many members of our team have their own lived experience of recovery and understand firsthand the importance of being welcomed without judgment.

Recovery is about more than stopping substance use.

It's about building a life worth sustaining.

That can mean finding employment, rebuilding relationships, securing identification, connecting with healthcare, learning how to manage everyday responsibilities, or simply rediscovering how to have fun.

That's why recovery at Roads to Recovery can look like a meeting or a conversation with a Peer Recovery Specialist, but it can also look like music, volunteering, a baseball game, bowling, cooking together, spending time outdoors, or showing up for someone else in the recovery community.

Recovery creates room for people to rediscover interests, relationships, purpose, and connection that may have been lost along the way.

We recognize and support multiple pathways to recovery. Each person's experience, goals, strengths, challenges, and definition of a meaningful life are different.

Our job is to help people identify what supports their recovery and connect them with the people, tools, resources, and community that can help them move forward.

Whether someone connects with Roads to Recovery through one of our residences, the Recovery Center, a community meeting, or simply a conversation with a Peer Recovery Specialist, we want them to encounter dignity, respect, hope, and the belief that change is possible.

Roads to Recovery began in Lynchburg in 2013 and has grown alongside the community we serve. Today, our work extends across recovery residences, intensive peer support, our Recovery Center, community groups and meetings, employment and resource support, and partnerships throughout Central Virginia.

We are proud to be part of a larger recovery community made up of participants, families, staff, volunteers, treatment providers, healthcare organizations, community partners, funders, and people who simply believe recovery deserves a chance.

We're here because recovery happens - and community helps make it possible.
